Saint Barbara Castle

It’s situated on the top of Benacantil Mountain. The fortress was built during the Arab period because of its strategic and defensive advantages. This monument has been a witness to all the happenings of the city.

With its commanding position 166 meters above sea level, Saint Barbara Castle offers some of the most spectacular panoramic views of Alicante, the coastline, and the sparkling Mediterranean beyond. Its origins date back to the 9th century, during the Muslim rule of the Iberian Peninsula, and it has since been shaped by centuries of battles, reconstructions, and cultural change.

Visitors can explore its multiple levels, from the oldest remains at the top to more modern structures added in later centuries. As you walk through the castle, you’ll find lookout towers, dungeons, cannons, and exhibition rooms that bring Alicante’s history to life.

The castle is not only a historical treasure but also a vibrant cultural space. It often hosts art exhibitions, concerts, and theatrical performances, making it a living part of the city rather than just a relic of the past. The walk up to the castle is scenic in itself, but there’s also an elevator carved into the mountain for easier access.

Whether you’re a history buff, a photography enthusiast, or simply looking for the best view in Alicante, Castillo de Santa Bárbara is a must-visit. It stands as a proud symbol of Alicante’s heritage, offering a perfect blend of culture, nature, and breathtaking scenery.
