The Ibero-Roman City of Lucentum

There’s nothing like going back to the origins of a city to understand its present-day features, so a visit to the hill known as Tossal de Manises facing Albufereta Beach is a must, especially if you are interested in archaeology. Here, hemmed in by tall apartment buildings, are the remains of Lucentum, listed as a National Historical and Artistic Monument since 1961.

Lucentum was once a thriving Iberian and later Roman settlement, considered the ancient heart of what we now know as Alicante. Dating back to the 4th century BCE and flourishing under Roman rule in the 1st century CE, the site offers a fascinating glimpse into everyday life over two millennia ago.

Walking through the excavated remains, visitors can observe well-preserved sections of city walls, public baths, a forum, streets, and the foundations of ancient houses and shops. The layout clearly reveals how advanced Roman urban planning was, and how their influence shaped the development of the region.

Despite its urban surroundings, Lucentum maintains a sense of quiet mystery, a pause in time where you can almost hear the echoes of ancient footsteps. Informational panels and guided tours help bring the ruins to life, making the experience both educational and inspiring.

For history lovers, archaeology buffs, or anyone curious about the roots of Alicante, Lucentum is an essential stop. It’s a powerful reminder that behind the modern cityscape lies a rich and layered past, waiting to be discovered.
